Looking for Therapy in English?

Therapy should feel comfortable, and for that to happen it has to be done in your language.
I live in Lisbon but my talk therapy is in English because English is my first language, simple as that.
Lisbon is a fantastic city, full of amazing people, great fish, gorgeous tiles, views for days, and new things happening all the time. But living somewhere beautiful isn’t all sunshine and pastel de nata.
When the tough stuff feels heavy, you might not want to show that to the outside world. Knowing how to talk to people in a way that makes you feel good is one of the most important parts of getting mental health help.
Being open in therapy is necessary. You talk about your worries, your past, your dreams, and your problems. You might feel confused or even not seen at all if you can’t fully describe your feelings or if your therapist doesn’t speak the same language as you. That’s why it’s crucial to work with a therapist who speaks your language as well as you do.
I’ve lived in Portugal since 2019, but I was born and raised in South Africa, and have lived in India and the USA. I know how important it is to understand cultural and linguistic differences. You should feel heard, not just in words but also in what they mean.
Many people who move to Portugal have trouble with more than just getting used to their new home. You may be feeling lonely, homesick, or like you have to “make it work” even though you’re having a hard time. You might miss your family and friends or be having identity issues because you aren’t surrounded by the things that make you feel like you. It can be hard on the emotions to get used to a new healthcare system, work culture, or even just making friends. Sometimes these expat meetups feel like everyone has a perfect shiny life on the outside, so why don’t you? Oh yeah, and those problems that you had in your last home, they sure have a sneaky way of following you to your new home, don’t they? All of these are normal and good reasons to go to therapy and get some help.
You’re not the only one going through this. Whether you’re new to Lisbon or have lived here for a while but still don’t feel at home, talking to someone about it can help. It’s always free to try therapy for the first time with, so there’s no risk in giving it a shot.
